 | About Evolve Paper

The Evolve Solution
Evolve paper is manufactured by M-real in the UK. M-real have developed an environmentally responsible approach (era) to papermaking. The era concept is a genuine commitment to minimise the impact on the environment at every stage of production. Central to this concept is the production of Evolve 100% recycled paper, giving consumers the opportunity to close the paper loop and reduce their impact on the environment.

Where does the recovered paper come from? Up to 180,000 tonnes of waste paper is diverted from landfill every year. The recovered paper is sorted to ensure high quality paper is not contaminated by low grade paper such as newspaper and cardboard. The proximity of the mill to major sources of waste paper minimises emissions and fuel use from unnecessary tranportation.
Is all the recovered paper turned in recycled fibre? No. Paper is made from about 70% fibre and 30% non-fibre ingredients that influence paper opacity, smoothness, whiteness and ink absorption. The RCF plant breaks down recovered paper, separating quality fibres from the additives and unsuitable fibres. Fibres can only be recycled 5-7 times before being too short for recycling. These by-products are called sludge.
Where does the recycled fibre go? The remaining 105,000 tonnes of recycled fibre is pumped directly to the paper mill, eliminating the need for any road transport. The fibre is used to produce Evolve 100% recycled papers.
How does the paper mill minimise its environmental impact? Papermaking uses a lot of water. The mill reduces the amount of water it takes from the environment by re-using and recycling at every stage. Water is used twice in the mill and then piped to the RCF plant for further use.
What is Evolve suitable for? Evolve papers are white, clean and smooth. Evolve Office is ideal for everyday correspondence, volume copying and printing, internal reports.
Where does the sludge go? Each week over 1,000 tonnes of sludge is treated and either distributed to local farmers as a rich agricultural spread or used in the on-site Waste to Energy Burner to generate additional power for the RCF and paper mill. Ash from the burner is used in the manufacture of cement.
What about the waste water? Once water has been re-used as much as possible in the mill and RCF plant it is treated at the on-site Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). After the cleaning and oxygenation process, microorganisms and enzymes are added and on its release it is more life sustaining than the existing river water.
What about the local environment? Water released into the local river is now cleaner than before the WWTP plant opened and has encouraged an abundance of wildlife to return to the area.

Recycling paper helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste paper going to landfill and rubbish tips, reducing the number of landfill sites needed and also reduces the amount of natural resources needed to produce paper. Recycled paper does not use wood and the process of making paper from recycled pulp uses fewer resources such as fossil fuels and water.
The Evolve production process uses a multi-stage cleansing process that is unique in Europe. It uses biodegradable cleaners and chlorine-free bleaches. Optical brightening agents are also added to enhance the whiteness and brightness of the paper. The result is an exeptionally bright and white paper that is environmentally produced.
Evolve paper can also itself be recycled, the combination of recovered high quality paper and the gentle cleaning process used means Evolve can be recycled several times.
Evolve is produced at a mill accredited to ISO 14001, the internationally recognised standard for environmental responsibility and management.
